Dedicated development team vs project outsourcing

Most software buying decisions collapse into two shapes. You either buy an outcome with a fence around it (a project), or you buy a team that will keep producing outcomes (a dedicated development team). Both are legitimate. They fail when they are used on the other kind of work.

Project outsourcing

A project is a bet that the work can be specified well enough to price. Discovery, a statement of work, a delivery date, a warranty. It fits a first MVP with a ruthless cut, a migration with a known target, or a bounded integration. The risk you accept is change: every surprise becomes a change request or a quiet cut in quality.

Projects also have an ending. That is a feature when you want a clean handover. It is a defect when the product is about to meet users and start teaching you what to build next.

Dedicated teams

A dedicated team is a bet that the work will continue and that domain knowledge is an asset. You pay for a squad and a cadence. Scope lives in the backlog, not in a contract appendix that is already stale. The risk you accept is that you must still prioritize. A team without a product owner will happily build the wrong thing on time.

Cost is a shape, not a number

Projects look cheaper on the purchase order because they hide the next three statements of work. Dedicated teams look more expensive by the month and cheaper by the year if the product is real. Compare twelve months of product progress, including the cost of re-explaining the domain to a new vendor, not the first invoice.

A hybrid that is honest
