What custom software development actually costs

A plain-language guide to custom software development cost: discovery, MVP ranges, dedicated team retainers, and the line items buyers forget.

Nobody reputable will quote a serious product off a contact form. Anybody who does is guessing, and you will pay for the guess later. What you can have, before a discovery, is a map of the cost shapes and the work that actually drives them.

The three numbers that matter

If a vendor only gives you the middle number, they are selling a project fantasy. If they only give you the third, they are selling a bench. You want all three.

Order-of-magnitude ranges

These are planning ranges for a senior software farm in 2026, not a bid. A focused discovery is typically days to two weeks. A thin but real first release — auth, the core workflow, production hosting, the admin someone needs to operate it — often lands in the mid five figures to low six figures depending on integrations and mobile. A dedicated pod of three to six people is a monthly retainer in the same band as hiring that squad, without the recruiting delay and with less management overhead if the farm is doing its job.

Mobile plus web plus a hostile legacy integration is not 'an app'. It is three products that share a brain. Budget them that way.

What quietly inflates the bill

How to spend less without buying a worse product

Cut surfaces, not integrity. Ship one platform well. Keep the data model honest. Do not skip the pipeline and the logs. Put a product owner on your side who can answer in a day. Those choices reduce cost more than arguing a rate down by fifteen dollars an hour.

Octobreze prices discovery as a fixed piece of work and then either a scoped increment or a dedicated team. We would rather lose a deal on honesty than win it on a number that cannot survive contact with the backlog.

If this is the decision you are in, talk to the farm.

A short conversation is enough to see whether Octobreze is the right software farm — dedicated team, scoped build, or a clear no.
